Sugar Skulls

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Zulka Morena Sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp meringue powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp water
  • Royal Icing:
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1/2 cup meringue powder
  • 2 lbs powdered sugar

Instructions:

Makes 2 medium altar sugar skulls

  1. Get supplies ready: Sugar, meringue powder, water, prepared molds, cardboard squares for drying the skulls
  2. Mix together meringue powder, water and sugar and mix until it resembles wet sand
  3. Press sugar mixture into the molds, evening out the back with a spatula or knife
  4. Immediately turn onto cardboard pieces and carefully remove molds. Repeat until all your molds are made. Let dry at room temperature for 24 hours.
  5. Prepare royal icing by mixing all of the ingredients together with an electric or stand mixer until icing peaks (about 9 minutes). Keep in an airtight container with a damp paper towel over the surface to keep from drying out. Do not refrigerate.
  6. Spread about 1-2 tsp royal icing on the back of one skull piece and glue to the other. Press gently together and wipe any excess that oozes out. Place upright on cardboard and let dry 12-16 hours.
  7. Dye the royal icing different colors using gel food colors. Prepare icing bags with small round tips (Wilton 1, 2, or 3 are best) and fill with 1/2 cup or so of the colored icing in each bag. Don’t overfill. Twist the end of the bag and secure with a rubberband. Place a couple of wet paper towels crumpled up in a cup and place the prepared bags in tip side down. This will prevent the icing from drying in the tip.
  8. Decorate the skulls: Using one color at a time, squeeze a little icing out on to a paper towel to make sure there’s no water in the tip from being in the cup. Then gently squeeze the bag and pipe lines, dots or any design you like. Let the icing set up for 5-10 minutes before adding the next color or when layering the same color. For example, for a mouth, pipe the long horizontal line first and let dry for 5-10 minutes. Once dry, pipe the shorter lines perpendicular to the mouth line to look like teeth.

Once fully decorated let dry overnight to set the royal icing. Keep stored in an airtight container when not using as decoration.

Jarabe Simple

Instructions:

En una olla fondo sobre fuego mediano, combine el azúcar y el agua y revuelva hasta que se disuelva el azúcar. Una vez disuelto, sigue bajo fuego lento durante 5 minutos. No deje que la mezcla hierva. La mezcla será un color ámbar muy claro. Deje que se enfríe completamente antes de transferir a los tarros de cristal. Mantenga refrigerado.

Las opciones de sabores, sustituir parte del agua para otros líquidos como jugos de frutas o cítricos. Por ejemplo, sustituir ¼ taza de agua para ¼ taza jugo de limón hace un jarabe simple.

Azúcar de Vainilla

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Coloque el azúcar en un bol. Divide una vaina de vainilla longitudinalmente con un cuchillo afilado. Utilice la cuchilla para raspar las semillas cuidadosamente y agréguelas a la taza de azúcar. Frote suavemente el azúcar y las semillas entre sus dedos hasta que las semillas estén mezcladas uniformemente en toda el azúcar. Añadir las semillas de un segundo de vainilla para un aroma y un sabor más fuerte.

Almacenar en un envase o frasco. Añadir las vainas de vainilla en el contenedor para impulsar el desarrollo el sabor y la fragancia, si así lo desea.

Usted puede utilizar esto en cualquier número de aplicaciones! Pruebelo en fruta, cereal, crepes y waffles, o cualquier tipo de postre para un sabor y aroma magnífico.

Cinnamon Sugar

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Zulka Morena Sugar
  • 2 tsp- 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon

Instructions:

Place the sugar in a bowl. Add in the cinnamon a little at a time and stir well after each addition. Keep adding cinnamon until desired flavor is reached.  Store in an airtight container.

You can use this in any number of applications!  Try sprinkling it on fruit, French toast, pancakes and waffles, or any type of dessert for a wonderful added flavor and aroma.

Orange Vanilla Sugar Body Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 c Zulka Morena sugar
  • Seeds from one vanilla bean (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp orange zest
  • 1/2 c oil (extra virgin olive oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil are all good ones)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 c orange juice

Instructions:

In a bowl place the sugar, vanilla bean seeds (if using) and orange zest and rub together with fingers to disperse the seeds and zest. There will be a light orange hue to the sugar. Add in the oil and vanilla extract and mix well.  Add the orange juice and stir.  Transfer to airtight containers.

Note: All ingredients are edible, so you can use this as a scrub or top your favorite ice cream with it!
